Hippies and Organic / Health Foods

Although the health food movement preceded the baby boomers, it grew by leaps and bounds once the baby boomers latched onto the idea of better eating. Hippies started some of the first health food stores and restaurants and took part in various movements which have become mainstream today. These included:

1. Vegetarianism

2. Eating lower on the food chain – a book “Diet for a Small Planet” was the bible of food for many of the early hippies.

3. Local and Organic foods – bulk foods – healthy restaurants

These gave fuel to a movement which today seems commonplace. Wal-Mart and Target, among others, now carry large quantities of organic foods. Whole Foods, Trader Joes and other large chains – as well as local co-ops and stores – are serving the every-growing market.
